4 Year Old Boy Causes Gorilla's Death When He Falls Into Gorilla Cage

A little Boy crawled through an opening and fell into a moat inside a gorilla enclosure, located at a Cincinnati zoo.

The child, 3 years old, was splashing in the moat when a 400 pound gorilla noticed him, there were two other gorillas also in the enclosure.

The gorilla, named Harambe, had just celebrated his 17th birthday, and was classified as a critically-endangered species.

Hysterical family members and onlookers watched in horror as the gorilla approached the child and began to drag him around the moat.

A special team was dispatched to the enclosure and the other 2 gorillas were removed, but when it came to Harambe a decision was made to put him down instead of using tranquilizers, due to the time element before it would take effect.

Instead of utilizing the tranquilizers, the critically-endangered gorilla was shot and killed.

The child was taken to the hospital with non-threatening injuries.

Many people took to social media voicing their disdain for the killing of the gorilla, which did not act threatening to the child, but Zoo officials stated it was a possibility the gorilla could have caused the death of the child, due to it's size and strength.

Zoo director speaks on the killing of the gorilla and the safety protocols that saved the child from serious injury.
